To be put on their notification list go to the blue link button directly below the calendar and sign up (all that is required is your name and email)

The following is for your information and distribution to your members.

As you may know, work on the Texas Capitol Vietnam Veterans Monument has begun, and we on the Ground Breaking and Dedication Committee are delighted to tell you that we will be holding Groundbreaking Ceremonies March 24 and 25 in Austin, which will include a Reading of the Names of the Texans who died in the Vietnam War, and the dedication of personalized dog tags bearing each man's name, which will be entombed in the Monument.

For more information and to volunteer in the Reading of the Names, please visit the Groundbreaking menu at buildthemonument.org.

An important next step in the construction of the Monument itself is the final design approval of the State Preservation Board, which will take place in the next few weeks. The elected leaders of the SPB want to be sure that the design meets with the approval of a sizable sample of Texas Vietnam veterans. To this end, TCVVM will present a collection of emails written by Texas Vietnam veterans to the SPB.

We need your help in order to ensure that Monument progress continues on schedule. Please take a minute to look at the design description at http://buildthemonument.org/the-design-2, then write an email expressing your support of the design. Please identify your service and any affiliation with veteran organizations. You can send the email to me at paladin_jam@yahoo.com.

Thanks in advance for your support. We look forward to joining together next fall as we dedicate this long overdue tribute.

Best regards:

11/14/12 - Veterans Day and much more

From: Alan Robart
Date: Sun, Nov 11, 2012 at 9:56 AM
Hey All,
I hope that you all have great Veterans Day as I will. I was proud to have been a VIP at the Fort Worth Veterans Day Parade yesterday. It was a wonderful parade and the honor of veterans was outstanding. The American Legion was represented well with numerous posts in the parade. I was really suprised at the number of civilians handing out cards etc. to all veterans and the comraderie felt by all in attendance. This stands as wake up call to us to continue to do what we do every day as Legionaries. It also shows us that what we do is really appreciated.
Thanks for your service and have a special day from me,

11/3/12 - Parade update

All is in order for another great Tarrant County Veterans Day Parade.  Our regular organizations have signed up with new themes and lots of new folks keep coming on board.  As always we have lots of wonderful kids in school bands and ROTC units.  After a glitch (always got to be something) our website is back on line but some entries received were not confirmed.  Be assured if you sent it in we have it.

There is still plenty of time (yeah – right) to get on board.  If you have not gotten your application in yet, you can email or fax it no later than Thursday 11/8/12 at 1600 (4pm).  Be sure to include the one line introduction for the announcer to use as you pass the reviewing stand.  We will still have to have the entry form with the back page signed before you can be assigned a spot in line, but as a last resort that can be turned in at the assembly point that morning.  Everyone is welcome, their is no charge to be in the parade but the earlier we know you are coming the better the spot you might get.

If you had our old website bookmarked, please update it to this one:

http://tarrantcountyveterans.com/

Applications and the information needed should be available here but if you still have questions please ask.

10/30/12 - Help needed, this week and Veterans Day plans

--- Help with Everman Post renovation

As most of you know already HOME DEPOT will be coming into Post 639 in Everman to help renovate the building, which is really needed. They are supplying $10,000.00 worth of supplies for the project.

Home Depot is supplying about 35 people on Thursday November 1st to start the renovation. They will paint put up walls, change ceiling tiles put down flooring, but there are things they cannot do and it will not be finished in one day. The Everman Fire Department is coming in on Wednesday to do the DEMO on the building. Becky and I will be coming on Wednesday Oct 31 to move furniture and finish demo if needed. Any assistance form anyone would be greatly appreciated.

We are requesting any assistance we can get for Friday November 2nd and Saturday November 3rd. We will have to build a bar do electrical and plumbing, maybe a little painting. We will start at 8.00am until. We will also supply food and drinks for both days. The post in Everman has been inactive for over 8 years. This renovation will really help us in serving the community and youth that have not had any help for awhile.

So please if you can come help. It is not just helping the Post it is also helping the community.

If you need further information please call me at 817-937-4412 or Becky at 817-300-8086.

Thank You

C. Matt Mathews

The Fight Continues sets out to honor all fallen U.S. Soldiers

Chanel 5 coverage http://www.nbcdfw.com/news/Texas-Marines-Plan-to-Honor-the-Fallen--175680871.html

From their website:

We at the “The Fight Continues” are starting a Veteran Service Project for the first Veterans Day after the end of the Iraq war. For all young Veterans who want to give something back, we at “The Fight Continues” will read all names of our fallen veterans throughout all conflicts from the birth of the United States of America. This being the first Veterans Day since Operation Iraqi Freedom, will be your chance for the younger generation of Veterans to not only participate, but see what Veterans Day is all about. Also, it will be a chance for the Veterans of the Global War on Terrorism to recognize all of the men and women who protect American values as well as freedom.

Look this over please to consider if we should send to our posts.  Could be a good event to get some PR, looks legit and cost free me.

What we need from the American Public is 600 locations across the United States and volunteers to help us complete this mission.

10/23/12 - Help needed, vote and participate

Mansfield Post 624 is in need of a special person.

ALMAC was great again this year and all of the money raised goes to providing items for deployed troops.  The problem is getting the packages to them.  Shipping costs last year were a very big expense.  If anyone has a point of contact with the military, or any company, that could assist with shipping it would help this project immensely.  Information about the program can be found at their website http://www.alpost624.org/

Responses should be directed to Post Commander Eddie South at american.legion624@sbcglobal.net or eddiesouth@sbcglobal.net 817-999-7188.

From Matt Mathews (817) 937-4412

First of all, I would really like to thank everyone who came to the meeting, lunch ride and the races on Sept 15th. We had a great time. Special thanks to Post 624 for taking the challenge at short notice. Special thanks to Harvey from Post 356 for setting up the races for us. Special thanks to Post 426 Alvarado for participating. For those of you who missed this event, you lost out on a wonderful day of riding and comradeship.

As you all know this upcoming weekend will be a busy one.. First there is ALMAC at Post 624 all day and the escort from the Fisher House.

Here are a few of other events going on you might be interested in.

Post 135 & 639 Riders have committed to a Cancer run in Lake Worth in the morning. We will be leaving Post 639 in Everman at 8:30 am. After the Run we will be going to Post 624 to participate in the ALMAC Celebration.

When we were at the races in Kennedale, we were asked by the owner of the track (Doug) if we would present the colors for the final race of the season on Oct 6th. Those of you that were at the races and agreed we will meet at the race track at 5:30 pm to practice for the 6:00 pm ceremony. After the ceremony you can stay and watch the races for FREE or return to ALMAC.

We also need about 12 Riders for the Ceremony, if you are interested please call me 817-937-4412 and let me know because I need a count for the race track owner to get everyone in FREE.

Subject: Crime Alert/ Notification

There is a syndicate of criminals presenting themselves as sales promoters who are giving free key rings at gas stations and parking lots. The key ring has a tracking device chip which allows the criminals to track and follow you. Please, please don't accept them. They select their seemingly well-to-do potential victims and if you accept, you might become a victim of their tricks. The key holders are very beautiful and hard to resist accepting; but remember, you may end up paying more than the cost of a key holder, including the risk to your life. Please advise your family members, email contacts, and friends as well.

Of the many services I’ve attended at DFWNC, I’ve only been able to attend one for a homeless Vet. It is, as Rick said, an emotional event. While no blood-family members may be there, I think it’s our duty as members of each Vet’s military family to be there if we can.

I appreciate any help you can provide. When details are available, they should appear on the calendar at http://txpgr.org.

Giving you a head’s up – Larry just called me and said that we’ll be honoring three homeless Veterans Thursday – I believe at 11:00 in morning. All three will be at Shelter A, one right after the other.

If you have never attended one of these, they are pretty emotional, as these Heroes have no one there, but the Patriot Guard Riders and sometimes one or more of the service agencies. It is an incredible honor for us to be there for them as they are laid to rest among their brothers and sisters.

I’ll have the itinerary out this evening.

May God protect all in harm's way,

Rick

Texas Toll Road Fees

I have received several items about Disabled Veterans, Purple Heart and Medal of Honor recipients not having to pay tolls on Texas toll roads.  The details have been vague and I am still not sure how it will be implemented and to what roads it will apply.  With the current threat of impounding vehicles that do not pay tolls I would advise extreme caution to those that do qualify.  The lower portion of this email contains the full series of correspondence for anyone that is interested.

Veterans with disabilities won't need TxTags to take advantage of a newly adopted program that waives fees for some veterans on toll roads operated by the Texas Department of Transportation, according to new details released by the agency.

Drivers with specialty plates signifying disabled veterans, and Purple Heart and Medal of Honor recipients, qualify for the free tolls.

Equipment to read license plates will automatically identify the specialty plates, and veterans do not need to sign up for the program.

To receive a disabled-veteran license plate, veterans need a 50 percent service-related disability rating from the Department of Veterans Affairs or a 40 percent rating due to lower limb amputation.

In Central Texas, veterans with disabilities will be able to drive free on the Loop 1 tollway, Texas 45 North, Texas 45 Southeast and Texas 130 (except for the southern 41 miles between Austin and Seguin, which are being built by a private company and are scheduled to open in October).

Veterans also will be able to ride free on the Camino Colombia toll road near Laredo, Texas 99 near Baytown, and Loop 49 in Tyler.

In Travis County, as of July, 3,637 drivers had disabled veteran or Purple Heart license plates, or 0.4 percent of the county's 973,609 registered vehicles.

The program, which will go into effect Jan. 1, was adopted last month after the American-Statesman reported in July that local toll authorities had not implemented a 2009 law authorizing them to let veterans drive free on toll roads.

At the time, TxDOT officials said adopting such a program could translate into a 10 percent reduction in revenue; some toll agency officials around the state worried that the program could lead to discounts for other needy groups.

TxDOT officials said they have since performed another revenue analysis and discovered that the program would not have as large an impact as originally predicted.

The Harris County Toll Road Authority, which adopted a free toll program for veterans with disabilities in 2009, said that group accounts for less than 1 percent of all toll transactions.

The Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority, which operates 183-A in Williamson County, voted in 2010 to implement the program only if the Legislature agrees to fund it.

Voting is a constitutional right that American citizens eighteen years and older can freely exercise. Sent 8/24/12 Traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall escort

Want to give folks as much notice as possible for planning purposes.

Attention American Legion Riders, escort information at the bottom.

Subject: Traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall, Plano, TX - Sept. 8th & 9th

Hi, I just wanted to let you know about this event, so the local posts can stop by.

On Sept. 8th & 9th, the AVTT.org Traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall which is the largest traveling replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall will be in Plano, TX. It is an 80% replica with 100% of the names.
The local posts can bring out their family and friends and help them understand the significance and remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

Where: GRACE OUTREACH CENTER, 3301 Preston Road, Plano, TX 75093

FYI: This is the Traveling Wall the was such a great experience in Benbrook last year http://www.post516.net/al2011/3_30wall.html

---- District 12 Riders are invited to join in this escort ----
Okay, here is the plan.

Friday September 7 2012

09:00 hrs muster at the west side of Collin Creek Mall between Pennys and Dillards.
09:15 Ride briefing.
09:30 Proceed to Grace Outreach Center via Alma to Parker to Parker and Preston.
10:00 Deliver our fallen brothers and sisters to the Out Reach Center

After arrival I will meet with those who can help provide security Friday and Saturday night to set up a schedule. We will be working with the American Legion, Post 321 Honor Guard, and the Plano VFW. The Church is working on  providing security during the day but I am sure a veteran will be present.

I did a dry run last Saturday and it was 6.1 miles and took thirty minutes.  We have several major intersections to go through and I am working with the Church and Plano PD to help us.  I know we are all mature grown ups but I need to remind you to please show the proper respect and honor to those who we are riding for, that cannot ride, at all times.
See you Friday morning September 7, 2012.

VJ Day: August 14, 1945 from fold3.com

The war that began for the United States on December 7, 1941, finally ended on August 14, 1945, with news of Japan’s surrender. VJ Day (Victory in Japan) inspired jubilant celebrations throughout America as we observed the end of World War II.

Although the war in Europe ended on June 8 (VE Day), the war with Japan in the Pacific persisted until President Truman made the radical and controversial decision to drop atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9. Even after that, events were climactic and negotiations tense as the conditions of surrender were debated. On August 8, Russia declared war on Japan and invaded Manchuria. Ultimately, the Japanese surrendered unconditionally on August 14, with General Douglas MacArthur formally accepting Japan’s surrender aboard the USS Missouri on September 2, 1945.

Veterans course 24-28 Aug 2012 Flyer: http://kencox.us/PWHT-August-Course.jpg

Passed on from Larry Burks, 12th District SGT-AT-ARMS

From: Jennifer Morrison jennifer.long20@ymail.com

Please let all the veterans know that their spouses and immediate family members 18 and up can also take the course with them for FREE. Our Fort Worth facilitator would love to do an introduction talk with you and veterans that you know about the course. This would be a 90 minute discussion on what the course is about, techniques they will learn, and answer any questions they would have regarding the course. Just let me know a date, time, and place and we can make it happen. We're really eager to get this out to our veterans. These techniques have changed many lives for the better.

Please let me know if there is anything we can do to help you.

-

Senior Discounts Update 01: Discounts reportedly offered to seniors are listed in the attachment to this Bulletin titles, “Senior Discounts 2012”. They are not automatic meaning you must ask for them when you make a purchase. Nor can they normally be combined with Military discounts. Some are applicable only in certain geographic areas or by participating retailers so it is always prudent to ASK! If you know of any chain company or retailer offering senior discounts not listed, request advise raoemo@sbcglobal.net and I will add it to the next update. [Source: Various 27 Jul 2012 ++]
