District 12 History project

How do you know where you are going if you don’t know where you have been.

The Legion does a great sales job but it is up to us to sell folks on joining our Posts to continue the proud heritage of the Legion Family Organizations in our district.

Share your post's legacy

All 13,000+ Legion posts worldwide, whether chartered in 1919 or yesterday, have histories and legacies that have contributed to the overall identity of The American Legion. Each post can convey its legacy by sharing historical photos, videos and print material on the Legion’s new Centennial Celebration web page: www.legion.org/centennial

SHARE OUR PROUD HERITAGE WITH EACH OTHER (this includes Units, Squadrons and Chapters too)

(If your post incomplete here, please send me details to share)

District 12 Logo: A brief description of the symbols used in our logo.

Here is a starter for our district.  It is the Post 516 history with a few modifications and district links.

Post 14: It is my understanding from conversations with Hubert Foster (now deceased) long time commander of the post that it was one of the very early posts started in the city and met at the old “Veterans Building” downtown.  It was named the “Executive Post” and its members included many prominent businessmen and politicians.

Post 14 is now chartered as the PFC Ruth E. Warlick Post in Southlake, Texas

Post 60: chartered as Arlington Post 60 to be a replacement for Post 467 after it became dormant (details below).

Post 297: chartered as Paul Mansir Memorial Benbrook

Post 356:  chartered as Houston M. Taylor Memorial Azle

Post 379:  chartered as Hurst-Euless-Bedford Post 379 in October 1964 and later renamed H.E.B. Post 379

HELP FROM THE LIGION FAMILY

Many great articles, pamphlets and other items are on the http://www.legion.org/  website and a “Capsule History of The American Legion” that I found in the Officers Manual is linked here.

Also from the Manual is the suggestion:

If possible, include a brief resume of your community’s history, and especially the part played by that locality in furnishing the men and women during the wars and conflicts.”  For those with a real fetish, here is a copy of the full Historian section.

How about a District 12 history project with no prizes or awards.

Send me what you’ve got and we can include it hub@12dis.org

Write your own American Legion Post History

Investigate your post background

Ask questions about Who, What, Why, When and Where

Who or what was it named for, and why.

When built, what for and other previous use (we do not have to tell all).

Let folks know why we are great.

May you have the hindsight to know where you have been, the foresight to know where you are going, and the insight to know when you have gone too far.
